There's this tangle of self-hatred and self-love; Nietzsche's quite good on
the subject. The person in me who declares what a miserable wretch I am is a
person of comparatively exalted moral consciousness (actually, Nietzsche said
it in fewer words than that; but I forget just how exactly). Also it's a kind
of simian ass-baring tactic - a pre-emptive strike...
