Hi Chris
According to many Europeans, you do live in a desert, but don't listen to
them. I can't speak to our theoretic musings except to say I always find
them intriguing. But --

I have read Quicksilver, and although some who loved his Cryptonomicon for
the narrative drive apparently don't so much like this one (a 900 page
first volume of a trilogy!), I did: good stuff on the beginnings of science
& the stock exchange, & some fun tales that will continue to evolve in the
next two volumes.
