I've searched everywhere I could think of and have unable to discover
whether Garioch had an Italian collaborator on his translations of Belli.
Garioch was something of a linguist, I believe, but that's all I can say.
But some languages or dialects thereof do translate wonderfully into Scots,
Russian, for example, MacDiarmid includes some very fine ones in parts of
the body of the 'Drunk Man', there has been an extraordinary recentish
translation of the New Testament into Scots (which bits I've seen remind me
of nothing so much as Aelfric's Old English version of Genesis). I also
recall on this tack a radio production of 'Hedda Gabbler' in which all the
actors spoke in Scots accents, it was most effective, and leads me to
thinking about the 'grounding' that non-standard speech can effect.
