For me, there have been five. 1) Julie Christie in Doctor Zhivago. ("I
will never return to you!" "No, Yuri." "Do you believe me?" "No.")
2) The older sister in Bergman's Wild Strawberries. 3) Sigorney Weaver
in Aliens I. 4) Michelle Pfeiffer in the first Batman film. 5)and the
winner is: Maria Conchita Alonso in the 1980s Arnold Schwarzenegger film
The Running Man. a) in a black jogbra, sweaty and doing bench presses
when he appears; b) micron-thin grey and yellow spandex one-piece
outfit, in motion (and sweaty) for the rest of the movie. Any straight
guy who doesn't have these last two images in his head may have lived,
even loved in dull reality but not vicariously. (PS The film itself,
The Running Man, was a genial and thorough guide, twenty years before
the fact, to political Schwarzeneggerianism.)
