A tentative PS on this: what I'd suggest is that the real problem, across
all lines of social division, is that of 'status', or perceived status. 'The
notion of 'class' for instance is largely, if not entirely, a schematization
of such differences, a rough drawn diagram that provides yet another of
those approximating maps. 'Gender' falls down as a differential whenever the
odds are equalised, and 'race' raises the problem of whose racism against
whom.
