The guy was definitely Old Testament -- Isaiah? -- I can never get the
Prophets straight in my head. The Lord God calls to him three times, and
it's only on the third shout that he answers: "Who is it?" -- " 'S me of
course, your Lord, you stupid schmuck!"

"Louerd, thu clepedest me" is one of my favourites. I discovered it late,
and showed it to a friend, Jim Friedman, who is, unlike me, a proper
medievalist. I insisted it began "beloved", Jim insisted it began "Lord",
and I only finally gave up when I came on a note to the the Augustine
source.
Have you come on the Medieval English Compendium? It's got the MED, and
masses of texts. Cool stuff.
