I would be intersted in learning what the possibilities are for a US citizen
to get into a Ph.d program in the UK. I am currently working on a Masters in
Technical Communication in a College of Engineering. My specific interests
are in user-centered design for Web application interfaces (not e-commerce)
and how to integrate the UCD process into the education of software
developers, HCI practitioners, and interface design specialists.
My goal in getting a Ph.D would primarily be to teach, rather than do
research, although research does interest me as a means to improve design
education. My department just began their Ph.D program last year, so it is
very small. It is also not as focused on design and design education as I
would like, and is geared to turning out researchers. In the US, most Ph.Ds
in academia are more focused on research than on design. There is at my
university a category called "lecturer" which is not tenure track and is
primarily for those who teach and do not do extensive research or
publishing. That is really the type of position I would hope to get.
I am a mature student with nearly 20 years of industry experience. I do not
want to move to get a PhD, but I have always wanted to live in the UK and
thought perhaps this would be an opportunity to do this. If anyone can point
me to places where I can get more information, I would greatly appreciate
it.
