Dear phd-design list members,
Always at this time of year, when the Northern Hemisphere goes on
holiday, a large number of folks try to unsubscribe for the duration of
the summer. This is not absolutely necessary as there are other ways.
TEMPORARILY SUSPEND MAIL
It is possible for you, by simple commands, to temporarily suspend your
mail from this discussion list, and then simply to reinstate the
mailings when you return. There is a list setting 'Mail delivery
disabled temporarily' which will switch on mail suspension for as long
as you require.
ARCHIVED MAIL
If you wish to catch up with the discussions that have continued during
your absence, there is an archive of messages which can be viewed by
date or by thread etc.
TRADITIONAL SETTING
I should also point out that the traditional setting for this list is
that it distributes each individual message to list members shortly
after the message has been sent to the list server.
DIGEST
Some folks, who may feel swamped by the mails that pour in when a
particularly hot topic gets going, may wish to invoke the 'digest'
setting - you receive larger messages (called "digests") at regular
intervals, usually once per day or once per week. These 'digests' are
collections of individual list postings. Digests are a good compromise
between reading everything as it is posted and feeling like the list is
clogging your mailbox with a multitude of individual postings.
INDEX
An even more minimal approach is an 'index' subscription. With an
'index' subscription, you receive short 'index' messages at regular
intervals, usually once per day or once per week. These 'indexes' show
you what is being discussed on the list, without including the text of
the individual postings. For each posting, the date, the author's name
and address, the subject of the message and the number of lines is
listed. You can then download messages of interest from the server (the
index contains instructions on how to do that).
WHERE TO FIND 'SETTINGS'
Instructions on all these settings are available at...
http://www.jiscmail.ac.uk/phd-design
...under 'join or leave the list'
But please don't send an instruction to the list. It only annoys the
other 1,143 people...
