This is a good question. In the long run, it can lead us to a better
understanding of the relationships between design and design research. How
marketing research relates to product design? Of course marketing research
has a life of its own and it has many ramifications that might stray away
from the design realm, but it is interesting to see the relations among the
core themes.
In many design domains, marketing research is only one of the research
areas. But at the same time, if we interpret marketing research in a very
wide sense, it can be construed to encompass most of the pre-design and
research activities.
I will give an example regarding facility planning and design. In that
area, marketing research in its pure form is only one of the phases of
pre-design research and studies. It informs the upper levels of facility
planing like needs assessment, business planning, and master planning. At
the lower levels we talk about facility programming (design brief in the
UK). Depending on how inclusive we want to be, we can say that all
pre-design activities have marketing research nature, or we might be more
specific and use the terminology already adopted in the field of facility
development. In product design, I see the product brief as an analog of the
facility program
With expectation for more information,
