Several weeks ago the Institute of Design announced the launch of a new,
one-year, methods-based professional degree for mid-career designers, called
the Master of Design Methods (MDM).
We are now accepting applications for the MDM. Note that the deadline for
Fall 2003 applications is June 1. Information and an application form are
available on the web:
http://www.id.iit.edu/grad/mdm.html
Some of the details are below. We hope you will pass this information along
to anyone in your organization or professional network who might be
interested. If you have any questions, comments or suggestions, please
contact Niti Bhan, Director of Graduate Recruiting, at the number below.
What is the Master of Design Methods?
Specially tailored for working design professionals, the MDM can be
completed full-time in two semesters or part-time in 4 or 6 semesters. It
draws on the Institute of Design’s particular strengths in design
methodology, allowing practitioners with established studio and project
management skills to develop additional competency in methods like user
observation and research, prototyping, interaction design, visualization and
strategic design planning.
The MDM is ideal for the mid-career designer seeking a stepping stone to
management, and the ability to drive design decisions and product
development strategy in conjunction with marketing, finance and other
functions. The user-centered methods taught in the MDM provide a way to
support proposed solutions with hard research and a clear business case.
>From an employer’s perspective, designers with a toolkit of these methods
are invaluable as leaders of the innovation and development process.
Who is the MDM for?
Prerequisites for this extremely selective program include an undergraduate
degree in design, at least five years of high-level professional work, and,
most importantly, an exemplary portfolio of professional work and peer
recognition as evidenced by strong recommendations, awards and other honors.
We welcome applicants who have financial support from their employers or
other institutions that seek to encourage professional development in
design.
The MDM degree is a complement to the Institute of Design’s other graduate
programs, the Master of Design (MDes) degree and the PhD. The MDes suits
those seeking to enter design from other fields, designers who want or need
two full years for focused professional study and project work, and people
seeking a teaching credential. The PhD is a research degree seeking to build
the knowledge base of design methods and practices.
