PCSG list users,

Thank you for your comments on investigating dysphagia in dyspeptic
patients. I too would be interested in seeing Raj's local guidelines for
dyspepsia.

Recently published SIGN guidelines
http://www.sign.ac.uk/guidelines/published/index.html advise that in the
management of ‘uncomplicated dyspepsia’ (dyspepsia not accompanied by alarm
symptoms) GPs can offer a non-invasive test for Helicobacter pylori
(involving a simple breath, stool, or blood test). A test and treat strategy
is recommended in all patients without alarm symptoms under the age of 55
years and it is suggested that this strategy may even be appropriate in
people over 55 years.

For an initial investigation of H pylori status, do GPs mainly use serology
testing? Is the stool antigen test for H pylori widely available? Has
anyone any experience of using the prescribable carbon urea breath tests for
H pylori as listed in the BNF?
