Each year the OR Society awards funding to students on sandwich courses for the purchase of
books and to young people for presenting a paper at the EURO conference. If you are on a
sandwich course in an OR related field, you could apply to get some help with purchasing books
for your final year of study. If you have some research to present (and would like a trip to
Istanbul!) you could get some help with travel costs. Full details of how to apply for the
Elsie Cropper Grants and Hicks Scholarships are given below.
Not forgetting those over the age of 30, the Society s Beale Medal recognises a sustained
contribution to the theory, practice or philosophy of OR. If you know of someone who has made
such a contribution, why not put his/her name forward? Again, details of how to nominate
someone (or yourself!) are provided below.
For those whose strengths are more on the applied side, the President's Medal offers an
opportunity to raise your profile and gain greater recognition. Details below.

Elsie Cropper Grants (Books for Sandwich Students)
These grants were instituted in memory of Elsie May Cropper, a senior member of the
Operational Research Executive (ORE) of British Coal, who died in service in 1989, aged 44
years. Elsie had always been a strong supporter of sandwich students who worked for a year in
industry as part of their degree courses.
Eligibility
Students who are studying OR at undergraduate level at a British University and who are
engaged upon a 12 month industrial placement in the field of OR in the UK are eligible.
Value
The value of each grant shall be #60.00. The number of grants in any year shall normally be
limited to twelve.
Entry
Students eligible for the award and wishing to apply should make a submission, which is to
include the name of the university attended, the title of the degree course being undertaken,
the OR-related subjects that have been and will be studied, a brief description (maximum 250
words) of the work being undertaken during the industrial placement, and a letter from the
employer confirming the applicant's employment status and university.
Selection
A grant may be made to any applicant who, in the judgement of the Awards Committee, meets the
criteria for eligibility. In the event of there being more applications than there are grants
available, the committee may select candidates on the basis of the most deserving, first come
first served, or such other equitable criteria as it may decide to apply. At its discretion,
the Awards Committee may make no offer if it considers that none of the candidates are
eligible.
Independence of committee members
During their term of office, members of the Awards Committee may not make nominations, nor may
they provide supporting documentation for nominees.
Condition
It is a condition of the grant that the money awarded be expended on the purchase of books or
other relevant materials such as CD ROMs or software required by the recipient for the final
year of their studies.
Application
Entries should be submitted by email unless infeasible. Attachments should take the form of
Word (doc) files. Please send entries to [log in to unmask], to arrive no later than 30th
April 2003.

Members aged under 30 who are intending to present a paper at EURO 2003 in Istanbul in July
are invited to apply for the Donald Hicks Scholarship. This scholarship is awarded in memory

died in January 1986. Closing date is 30th April 2003. The rules and conditions are set out
below.
Eligibility
Persons under 30 years of age who have at least two years' working experience, based in the
United Kingdom, of OR in industry, commerce, government, or in a University teaching or
research post at the time of application are eligible for consideration. Members of the Awards
Committee may not apply. No person may win more than one Donald Hicks Scholarship.
Value
The scholarship will cover the conference fee, together with reasonable travel and subsistence
costs incurred in attending the EURO 2003 Conference in Istanbul in July 2003, up to a maximum
total of #500.
Entry
Candidates may nominate themselves, or may be nominated by a member of The OR Society who is a
supervisor, head of OR, head of department or occupies some other responsible role. In respect
of each nominee the required submission is a detailed curriculum vitae, names and contact
details of two independent referees who must be members of The OR Society, and an extended
abstract of a paper which they intend to present at the conference.
Selection
The scholarship will only be awarded to a young OR worker of outstanding promise. The
successful candidate's abstract should show promise of leading to a paper important to the
development of OR. Subject to these requirements the Awards Committee shall make the award to
the person who it considers, on the basis of the submitted documentation, to be the most
meritorious candidate. At its discretion, the Awards Committee may make no offer if it
considers that none of the candidates are of sufficient merit.
Independence of committee members
During their term of office, members of the Awards Committee may not make nominations, nor may
they provide references for nominees.
Conditions of the scholarship are that:
- the person to whom the scholarship is awarded has his/her abstract accepted for the
conference;
- he/she presents a paper, based on the submitted abstract, at the conference;
- he/she submits the paper to one of the Society's refereed journals for publication, unless
the paper is to appear in the published proceedings of the conference
All claims for reimbursement of conference fees, and reasonable travel and subsistence costs
incurred in attending the EURO conference must be fully substantiated by receipts and
accompanied by appropriate documentation to show that the above conditions have been fully
complied with.
Submission
Entries should be submitted by email unless infeasible. Attachments should take the form of
Word (doc) files. Please send entries to [log in to unmask], to arrive no later than 30th
April 2003.
Beale Medal (Sustained Contribution to OR)
The OR Society's Beale Medal is awarded in memory of the late Martin Beale to give formal
recognition to a sustained contribution over many years to the theory, practice, or philosophy
of OR in the UK, or to some combination of those areas. Nominations are now invited with a
closing date of 30th April 2003. The rules and conditions are set out below.
Eligibility
All persons other than members of the Awards Committee who, at the time of application, have
at least ten years' working experience, based in the United Kingdom, of OR in industry,
commerce, government, or in a University teaching or research post, are eligible for
consideration. Existing holders of the Beale Medal may be considered, provided that the
contribution forming the subject of the entry is in a different area or is substantially
differentiated from the basis of the previous award in some other manner.
Entry
Candidates may nominate themselves, or may be nominated by a member of The OR Society. In
respect of each nominee the required submission is a statement describing the sustained
contribution made by the candidate to OR, which must have extended over a period of at least
five years. The contribution may be to the philosophy, theory or practice of OR, or to some
combination of those areas. The contribution must be such as to have advanced significantly
the knowledge, understanding or practice of the subject. The statement must be endorsed by at
least six independent sponsors, who shall be members of The OR Society and shall have appended
their names and signatures to it.
Selection
In any year, the award will be made to the individual who, in the opinion of the Awards
Committee, has made the most outstanding sustained contribution to Operational Research. The
Awards Committee may, if necessary, take advice from outside specialists in the field, who are
independent of the candidate. The decision remains the responsibility of the committee alone.
The Committee may decline to make an award if it considers that none of the entries is of
sufficient merit.
Independence of committee members
During their term of office, members of the Awards Committee may not make nominations, nor may
they sponsor nominees.
Submission
Entries should be submitted by email unless infeasible. Attachments should take the form of
Word (doc) files. Please send entries to [log in to unmask], to arrive no later than 30th
April 2003.
