Donisthorpe Miners' Welfare - an opportunity for education and social
interaction in mining history and archaeology.
Donisthorpe Miners' Welfare, in the former South Midlands coalfield area of
England, are holding an open meeting on Tuesday 18th. March, 2 p.m.
DM's - Donisthorpe Miners Welfare Open Access Centre
Church Street
Donisthorpe
Swadlincote
DE12 7QD
I understand the purpose of the meeting is essentially threefold.
* To enable representatives of interested organisations to explore the
potential of DM's as a venue for arts and culture activity involving our
staff, members and the whole community.
* As an opportunity for DM's to explore with you or your organisation how we
may support your artistic and cultural activities referring to our status as
a 'One-Stop-Shop'.
* An opportunity for you / your organisation to gain valuable information on
new initiatives, best practice in promoting accessible, relevent arts,
heritage and culture and the sources of funding to fund such. Not to mention
an opportunity to celebrate recent achievements in the area.
Jonathan Peter O'Farrell, Undergraduate Student, Tourism and Geography and
Applied Studies, at the University of Derby, is a Volunteer Project Worker
at the Welfare and tells me that -
>the Miners' Welfare focuses on the immediate
>needs for recreation, relaxation, support, sports and
>social space for the community. Arts, history and heritage,
>were not, or probably will not, be seen as isolated
>activities of themselves, but rather vehicles for practical
>implementation of youth work, cross generational work and
>general health / wellbeing goals for our users
Here is an opportunity local mining history interests to interact with a
former coal and clay working community, and stimulate interest in mining
heritage.
Anyone interested should contact Jonathan
<[log in to unmask]> or just turn up on the day.
