Course: Introduction to Regression Modelling
Venue: Department of Social Medicine
Duration: five days
Dates: May 24th-28th 2004
Cost: £750
Tutors include: Sara Brookes, Alan Montgomery, Tim Peters (course
organiser), Jonathan Sterne
-------------------------------------------
The course aims to provide an understanding of the statistical principles
and practice of basic (univariable and multivariable) generalised linear
models.
The course is designed for students who have a knowledge of statistical
methods to the level of the Basic Statistics course (visit
http://www.epi.bris.ac.uk/shortc/shortc.htm for details of this course). A
basic appreciation of research designs (to the level of the Basic
Epidemiological Methods course - visit
http://www.epi.bris.ac.uk/shortc/shortc.htm for details of this course).
would also be helpful. KNOWLEDGE OF STATA IS ESSENTIAL (visit
http://www.epi.bris.ac.uk/shortc/shortc.htm for details of our Introduction
to Stata course).
Topics to be covered include: revision of basic methods in a statistical
modelling framework; basic terminology and concepts in modelling
(stratified analysis to control for confounding, interaction, dummy
variables); interpretation of model coefficients; simple and multiple
regression and its synonyms (ANOVA, ANCOVA); odds ratios and relative
risks; logistic regression; analytical strategies. Teaching will make up a
total of thirty hours. Learning will be by short lectures on topics,
interspersed with practical sessions using paper-based examples and
extensive Stata practicals on example datasets. Much of the course will
involve discussions of how to interpret output from statistical packages
such as Stata.
