Glasgow Museums Major Projects & Research Section
The Major Projects & Research Section was created in September 2002 in
order to ensure that all major projects are underpinned with the best
current knowledge and to encourage and stimulate research into the rich
collections of Glasgow Museums. The overall aim of the section is to
develop Glasgow Museums as a centre of excellence for
collections-related research.
The Section consists of the Major Projects and Research Manager plus
four Research Managers in the subject areas of Art, Human History,
Natural History and History of Technology. Each of the Research Managers
will be responsible for developing and managing programmes of
collections-related research in their subject areas.
The section is also responsible for developing and maintaining
professional curatorial standards within Glasgow Museums and works
closely with the curatorial staff, collections management and
conservation sections to ensure that we meet these exacting standards.
The section has taken over responsibility for managing the content
development side of the Kelvingrove New Century Project, making sure
that all the displays are properly researched and interpreted. The
section is also involved in the development of the new Museum of
Transport that is being planned for a new site on the river Clyde. This
landmark museum will create a more accessible and environmentally stable
home for Glasgow's significant Transport and Technology collections, and
for the first time allow the proper interpretation of Glasgow's
important maritime history through the museum site, the Glenlee tall
ship and our unique ship model collection.
