Apologies for cross-posting:
The British Universities Film & Video Council is pleased to announce the
successful conclusion of its project to digitise 80,000 British newsreel
documents. Funded by the Arts & Humantities Research Board, this four-year
project has resulted in 80,221 (to be exact) commentary scripts, dope
sheets, shot lists and assignment sheets added to the British Universities
Newsreel Database (BUND), a database of 160,000 British newsreels.
During the lifetime of the project, the BUFVC has also created a
biographical database of newsreel staff, a database of abstracts of newsreel
literature, online audio interviews with newsreel veterans simultaneous
transcripts, published Mass-Observation documents on audience reactions to
newsreels during WWII, established a prize for newsfilm studies, published
the autobiography of cameraman John Turner and a Reader for newsreel
studies, and it has created links from 40,000 of its newsreel records to
downloadable newsreels from the British Pathe web site. The BUND's most
recent feature is an 'interactive programmes map', displaying some of the
colourful programmes and brochures of events filmed by the newsreels which
the BUFVC acquired along with its collection of newsreel documentation.
The BUND will continue to be maintained by the BUFVC, and regular users will
see new features appear in the coming months.
The BUND can be found at www.bufvc.ac.uk/newsreels.
