Council for British Archaeology
Project Officer required
The Council for British Archaeology has been awarded grants by The British Academy and English Heritage for a project to develop an Online Guide to Archaeological Research in Progress.
There is currently no readily searchable, comprehensive database where it is possible to discover what archaeological research is currently being done in Britain or by scholars based in British institutions working overseas. English Heritage and the British Academy (BASIS) have agreed to fund, initially for one year, a project to develop and pilot the idea. If it proves successful, it will be desirable to develop the initiative as an ongoing service.
The broad need for an online guide to archaeological research in progress is to:
* Help new researchers know whether their research idea is already being addressed
* Help funders, supervisors and others to see how research proposals relate to other initiatives
* Indicate the range of funding sources and institutions supporting research
* Provide an overview of current research trends
* Provide a possible starting point for critical reviews of trends in research.
* Help to foster collaborative networks between researchers and interest groups
* Increase awareness of research issues
* Provide a basis for monitoring how techniques used in research relate to career skill needs.
The aim of this developmental project is to define the scope and demonstrate the value of an Online Guide to Archaeological Research in Progress through identifying user needs, developing and testing a working pilot service, and exploring the practicalities of further development as an on-going service.
The CBA is looking for an enthusiastic, self-motivating Project Officer to mastermind the project and carry it through. The successful candidate will have:
* a sound general knowledge of the organisation of archaeological research in the UK, and preferably some direct experience
* good computing skills, especially with database design and web-based access facilities
* good communication skills to liaise closely with potential user groups
* an ability to analyse and present the requirements for future project development and resourcing.
It is envisaged that the project will be based in the CBA's office for the British and Irish Archaeological Bibliography at The British Academy in central London, though other arrangements might be considered for the right candidate.
The appointment will be made within the CBA's 'Officer' Grade (UKP 17,399-UKP 25,011 plus London weighting of UKP 2,134).
Applications should be made in writing (preferably by e-mail in Word format) by 9am on Monday 14th April to Dr Mike Heyworth FSA MIFA, ([log in to unmask]), CBA, Bowes Morrell House, 111 Walmgate, York YO1 9WA (phone 01904 671417). A copy of the project research design is available by e-mail on request. Your application should explain why you are interested in the project and the skills you would bring to it, and provide a CV and the names of two referees. Interviews will be held in late April/early May at The British Academy, 10 Carlton House Terrace, London SW1Y 5AH. The appointment is expected to start from Monday 2nd June and will be for one year in the first instance, though with a possible longer-term contract if the pilot project is successful and funding is available for development into an on-going service.
