The winner of the first Jodi Mattes Access Award is the National
Maritime Museum in Greenwich for www.nmm.ac.uk . The award was
announced at RNIB's Talking Images conference on 20th May. I would like
to congratulate Aileen O'Riordan (Online Projects Manager) and
colleagues at the NMM, as well as their website designers, Box UK.
The judges felt that the NMM website clearly demonstrates a commitment
towards compliance with standards; we were also impressed with the ease
of navigation around the NMM's Collections Online. More details about
the winning website and the award are at
http://www.museumscomputergroup.org.uk/index_award.htm . There is also
an excellent article about the winner on the 24 Hour Museum website at
http://www.24hourmuseum.org.uk/nwh_gfx_en/ART16850.html .
The judges also commended Tate for the innovative content in their i-Map
system ( www.tate.org.uk/imap ). Congratulations are due to Caro Howell
and Daniel Porter.
On behalf of the judges, I would like to thank everyone who submitted a
nomination and to congratulate all the nominated sites for their efforts
in improving access to the wealth of information available in the
sector. I hope that this award will encourage other museums to improve
compliance with access standards and to produce innovative and
accessible content.
The judging panel comprised Julie Howell from RNIB, Rebecca McGuiness
from the Metropolitan Museum in New York, Ross Parry from Leicester
University, Nick Poole and Marcus Weisen from Resource, and myself,
representing the MCG. I would like to thank the judges for all their
work on the award.
