Netskills Workshop:
Web Pages From Scratch
An Introduction to Creating Web Pages
09:30 - 16:30 Tuesday 23rd September 2003 Strathclyde University
For many sections of society the World Wide Web is becoming an
essential part of everyday life. Whether being used for commerce,
research, education or leisure, one of the key features of the web is
the ease with which individuals can publish on-line information. Even
in a short space of time sophisticated and exciting results can be
achieved with relative simplicity.
This is a practical workshop for web users who wish to start creating
their own web pages. Whether you are providing page content for
business, education or leisure, this one-day workshop - updated to
include the current web authoring standards of XHTML and CSS - will
give you the
key skills you need to make your information available on the web.
Workshop Content:
The workshop will comprise presentations, demonstrations and
hands-on sessions with opportunities for questions and discussion.
Participants will each receive a workbook which contains workshop
exercises, presentation slides and other relevant materials.
Topics covered will include:
* Creation of web pages and the basics of web page delivery
* An introduction to HyperText Markup Language (HTML)
* Basic web page formatting using Cascading Style Sheets (CSS)
* The importance of HTML standards, the W3C and validation of web
documents
* The use of XHTML and HTML
* Steps for common sense web design
* Publishing documents on a web server
* Use of web authoring tools and converting office documents for use
on the web
By the end of the workshop participants will have:
* Created several HTML web pages
* Used HTML to add elements such as graphics and hyperlinks to web
pages
* Used simple CSS to format web pages
* Incorporated lists and tables in their web pages
* Used a validation service to check their pages for errors and
standards compliance
* Investigated the use of various software tools for web page creation
and the conversion of MS Office documents into HTML
Workshop Requirements:
Participants need no special technical skills; however basic computer
skills such as using a mouse and keyboard are required. Experience
of using Microsoft Windows to open, save and close files, folders and
applications is also essential. Participants are expected to have seen
the
World Wide Web and used a Web browser such as Netscape or Internet
Explorer.
This workshop can also count towards the Netskills BTEC Professional
Development Certificate (PDC) in Web Development. For further details
and a registration form for the PDC, please see our accreditation pages
at http://www.netskills.ac.uk/accreditation/ .
The cost of the workshop is £ 125 for participants from UK higher and
