Archives Hub Collections of the Month, March 2003
This month we have selected a series of archives which document
Britain's connections with Iraq over the last 150 years. They range
from Joseph Bonomi's 1856 archaeological lecture notes on
Nineveh and Babylon to Davina Miller's archive of papers relating to
the 1992-1996 Scott Inquiry into the export of defence equipment to
Iraq by British firms.
Illustrating the pages are photographs from the archive of Gertrude
Bell (1868-1926), an archaeologist who served with British
Intelligence during the First World War. Bell founded the Iraq
Museum in Baghdad in the 1920s. Her archive is held at the
University of Newcastle.
