SEMINAR DETAILS
The first seminar is:
"Influencing Skills" led by John Miller on Wednesday 8th October
Influencing and leadership skills are a hot topic in librarianship.
The delayering of management hierarchies in libraries has caused
traditional command chains to disappear. However, the resultant flatter,
leaner management matrixes have brought fresh challenges. In our new non-
command orientated libraries we now have to negotiate with one another to
set objectives and achieve targets. But, how do we do this? An immediate
response might be 'use your common sense'; however, the process can prove
to be fairly uncommon to our senses. All too often the hidden agendas and
office politics of colleagues obstruct consensual and objective decision-
making. The solution is neither to admit defeat nor shout and scream, as
tempting as this may be. It is, instead, to engage one another to
seek 'win-win' situations by skilful persuasion. In short, we need to
learn to lead by influencing others.
This seminar will provide you with a better understanding of 'influencing
skills' through discussion and group work, covering issues such as the
meaning of influence; persuasion; the importance of feedback; influencing
upwards; office politics; and ethical boundaries.
John Miller is Assistant Librarian, Corporate Services at the Ministry of
Defence Information & Library Service in London. His professional
interests include ethics, leadership and related management competencies.
