SEMINAR DETAILS
"Influencing Skills" with John Miller (Assistant Librarian, Ministry of Defence) on Wednesday 8th October (6 - 8pm)
Influencing and leadership skills are a hot topic in librarianship. This seminar will provide you with a better understanding of 'influencing skills' through discussion and group work, covering issues such as the meaning of influence; persuasion; the importance of feedback; influencing upwards; office politics; and ethical boundaries.
"Marketing your Service" with Anne McIlwaine (Library Manager at the School of African and Oriental Studies, University of London) on Tuesday 4th November (6 - 8pm)
Librarians and Information Managers at all levels are increasingly required to "market" their services, both within their own organisations and externally. This seminar, led by Anne McIlwaine, which will introduce delegates to this topic, and will include some group work.
"Managing your Career" on Wednesday 10th December (6 - 8pm)
"Planning the beginning, middle and end of your career" with Philippa Dolphin (Librarian, Birkbeck College)
This session will cover getting jobs, achieving balance and variety, moving up the career ladder, and planning for the future.
"Career Case Studies" with Gerry Power (Access Librarian, Institute of Advanced Legal Studies) and Liz Lewis (Trainer, Information & Archives Dept, BBC)
Gerry will consider the pros and cons of working in different sectors, and will suggest ways to identify your transferable skills and to keep track of your achievements. Liz will focus on her experience of working in non-traditional library roles and share career development strategies that have worked for her.

Booking information: The cost of each seminar is just £10 for members of the Career Development Group (or £25 pounds to attend all three); £15 for non-members (or £40 to attend all three); and £5 for students and the unwaged (or £10 for all three).
