Subject: Consultation on Licensing BEI & ERIC

Consultation on Licensing BEI (British Education Index) &
ERIC (Education Literature Datasets).

Please note that responses are required before 29 January
2003

1) Introduction

The JISC invites responses from all universities regarding
an agreement for the BEI & ERIC (Education Literature
Datasets).

Before we can move forward with this agreement, the JISC
needs to establish the number of institutions that would be
interested in subscribing to the BEI & ERIC (Education
Literature Datasets) from 1 August 2003.

2) The Offer

ERIC is a bibliographic database that indexes over 775
periodicals covering the subject of education. BEI offers a
complementary resource with a stronger focus on British
literature. It indexes over 350 British education and
training periodicals, with developing coverage of national
report and conference literature.

3) Potential Pricing

The current agreement for BEI & ERIC (Education Literature
Datasets) is subsidised by JISC and the subscription fee is
£600.00 plus VAT per annum.
This agreement ends on 31st July 2003.
Prices for the new agreement (without subsidy) are as follows:

JISC CHARGING BANDS

Subscriptions fees

       Year 1 Year 2 Year 3

A-B £ 1,450.00 £ 1,495.00 £ 1,553.00
C-D £ 1,350.00 £ 1,400.00 £ 1,445.00
E-F £ 1,300.00 £ 1,340.00 £ 1,400.00
G-H £ 1,100.00 £ 1,135.00 £ 1,180.00
I-J £ 900.00 £ 927.00 £ 970.00

All figures are per annum and are exclusive of VAT, which
must be added to prices.

To determine which band your institution is in, see
http://www.jisc.ac.uk/dner/collections/newbanding.html

4) Period of the agreement

The period of agreement is for three years and institutions will be expected
to commit to subscribing for the full period.

5) Next steps

We now need to obtain an estimate of the potential uptake
of the service within the UK higher education community. We
would be grateful if you would advise us whether your
institution is interested in taking up a subscription to BEI
& ERIC (Education Literature Datasets) at the prices listed
above:

Please either respond by visiting
www.jisc.ac.uk/jiscforms/user/form38.php and completing the
form

or by e-mail to [log in to unmask] giving the
information below:

YES I am interested in subscribing to this database.

NO I am not interested in subscribing to this database.

If your institution is interested, but not at these prices,
what case could we make to JISC for subsidising this
resource?

If you are unlikely to subscribe to BEI & ERIC (Education
Literature Datasets), what other resources will you use
instead?

Please reply by e-mail by 29th January 2003.
