Hi Louise,
We've been caught out by this. Thanks for pointing this out, I've just
checked a couple and they are as you say now "dead" links. What really
irritates me is that on the 30/03/03 I sent the following email to the
Springer Helpdesk:
"On the what's new page at: http://www.springerlink.com/whatsnew.htm is
says "This Summer Springer's online information service LINK will be
relaunched with a new logo [ SpringerLink ], a new appearance and a new
URL www.SpringerLink.com"
My question is should we point our users to this new site now?
Also will we have to change all our existing links to point to this
service?"
This is the reply I received on the 07/04/03:
"Thank you very much for your mail. This was our first general
announcement of a new release for SpringerLink. You do not need to
change your existing links. We will continue with more precise
information in the course of the next weeks and you may be assured that
we will do everything in order to avoid work for our users in connection
with the new launch."
I would like to point out that I haven't received any more premise
information since receiving this reply, so much for the publisher giving
more precise information!!!
Would someone from Springer like to explain what has happened and what
those of us who have dead links need to do to get them working again?
This really isn't good enough - we are after all paying for this
service. Also, when did this happen, and will we be entitled to
compensation for loss of access caused through no fault of our own.
Don't they want their journals to be used?
Cheers
Lesley

Subject: Springer, what were you thinking?
Hi all,
Those of you who have links from your Springer journals to the German
server will be interested to know that all your individual titles links
will now be dead, and those which do manage to redirect will go to - the
wrong Metapress page! Not a Springer journal in sight.
Those of you who have links from your Springer journals to the American
server will be further interested to know thatr all your individual
titles will be redirecting to a 'Springer-LINK' site which now has a
Metapress interface and seems (for the moment anyway) to allow access to
the same group of titles. Off-campus, who knows?
We're fairly lucky at Leeds since we had URLs to both sites. But I
thought that Springer's new interface would run in parallel with the old
one for a while? and that redirects from springer.de would work.
Anyone else been caught out?
Louise
