175th Anniversary Conference
The Diffusion of Knowledge: The Past, Present and Future of Higher Education
An International Conference to be held at the University of Central Lancashire, Preston, UK
Tuesday 23rd September 2003
In September 2003, the University of Central Lancashire will be celebrating the 175th anniversary from its small beginnings at an Institution for the Diffusion of Knowledge in Preston to its present position as the 6th largest university in the UK. The highlight of the week's celebrations will be an international conference, the theme of which is "The Diffusion of Knowledge" Past, Present and Future.
The audience for the conference will be a wide range of vice chancellors and senior executives from the many universities, colleges, organisations and companies around the world that are in partnership with the University of Central Lancashire.
"All proposals will be peer reviewed by the Conference Academic Committee with a view to revised publication of full papers in 2004."
The theme of the past, present and future of higher education will be explored through both a national and an international perspective. The emphasis will be how we can understand the present role of higher education from the past, and how our understanding of the present illuminates how higher education will change in the 21st Century.
The morning session will focus on keynote addresses from prestigious speakers on higher education in Asia, North America, Europe and the UK. In the afternoon there will be a series of concurrent sessions around the following topics:
· Access to higher education and the inclusion agenda: including but not limited to the themes personal empowerment, the digital divide and social justice
· Student financing: including but not limited to the themes of earning and learning, national policies and the state vs. private funding
· E-learning: including but not limited to the themes of borderless education, the digital divide and intellectual property
· International opportunities for students including but not limited to the themes of internationalizing the curriculum, globalization and learning and sustainable development
All papers should focus on the core idea of the dissemination of knowledge, understood broadly not just as the passing of understanding from tutor to student, but from student to tutor, student to student, institution to institution, and from culture to culture.
