(Apologies for Cross Postings....)
As part of the 2003/2004 operating season of the EARTHSHIP program, we are
please to announce the implementation of the FIELD ASPECTS OF GIS.
EARTHSHIP is based aboard the 200' tall ship, EMPIRE SANDY. Its purpose is
to promote a multidisciplinary approach to coastal and general environmental
protection, and to promote wise use practices in the tiny country of St.
Vincent and the Grenadines, West Indies. The use of Geographical
Information Systems will be a central part of all work on board the ship.
All projects, wether socio-economic, biological, education or otherwise,
will use GIS as a central focus, and all information collected aboard the
ship will be stored in GIS related databases.
As part of the EARTHSHIP effort, we are offering a 2 week course in Field
Aspects of GIS. In general, the course is designed to introduce and
practice the geographical concepts and skills required to collect accurate
field data in a way which is best suited to the use of GIS. Participants
will learn and practice useful concepts of GIS through a focus on
conservationsThose who would benefit most form this course would include:
A) Undergraduates, graduates, and professionals who know little about GIS,
but who wish to use GIS and/or interact with GIS professionals as part of
their field of interest or specific projects or responsibilites.
Individuals may represent may different fields including biology, sociology,
economics, conservation, management, marketing etc.
B) Undergraduates and graduates with a medium to strong working knowledge of
Geographical and GIS concepts who wish to gain more experience in on-site,
field related aspect of thier work. Additionally, the course offers the
unique and beneficial experience of practicing the effective introduction of
GIS and geographical concepts to those from many different field of study
who may have little knowledge of GIS, but who might also be responsible for
providing valuable data for GIS related projects..
Two course sessions will be held during the 2003/2004 session of EARTHSHIP,
the first to be held from December 7th to 20th, 2003, the second to be
held.from February 15th to 28th, 2004. Course instructors are Alan Mills

in GIS project implementation and GIS training, and have been the primary
designers of the GIS Field Course. University accreditation will be
available for the second session of the course in February, 2004.
