Dear BGA members:
This is to inform you that the 2003 British Geophysical Association
(BGA)/Royal Astronomical Society(RAS) "Bullerwell Lecture" will be given
by Professor Michael Kendall of the University of Leeds. The title of his
lecture will be "Tectonics of the lowermost mantle". This distinguished
medal lecture will be given by Professor Kendall at the joint EUG/EGS/AGU
Spring meeting in Nice on Tuesday April 8th, 2003 at 19:30 in Room R4. (

I am also very pleased to inform you that following the BGA Annual General
Meeting, Professor Peter Maguire of the University of Leicester has been
elected as the next President of the BGA. Peter will take over from me
after the EUG/EGS/AGU joint meeting in Nice which will conclude my term of
office as President.
The BGA now aims to organise three meetings a year, and in addition invites
members to organise meetings on geophysics. The three meetings are:
Bullerwell Lecture
To be given each year by an outstanding young British geophysicist, as a
major lecture at the European Geophysical Society annual meeting in Nice,
France.
Advances in Geophysics
A two-day meeting to be organised each year as the Royal Astronomical
Society's February "G" meeting, the theme to be a "hot topic" of
geophysics, chosen each year.
Postgraduate Research in Geophysics
A one- or two-day meeting to be held at a university with an active
postgraduate geophysics programme, in September or October of each year.
The BGA look forward to seeing many of you in Nice in April. I want to take
this opportunity to thank the BGA committee and membership for all the help
they have given to establish the new BGA programme.
Best wishes
Paul Young
