Non-Invasive Investigation and Monitoring of Waste Sites: Engineering to
Post Closure
University of Birmingham
Non-invasive geophysical methods are frequently used in determining the
location, extent, content and depth of closed landfill sites; the
mapping of leachate plumes escaping from both operational and closed
sites; in monitoring the performance of landfill liners and the
properties of the waste; and assessing the appropriateness of sites for
new landfills. Recent regulation (e.g. Part IIA, landfill directive)
has, for example, led to the need to identify the boundaries of waste
sites, characterise their content and has seen the requirements for
monitoring of new landfills become more stringent. This meeting will
enable current practitioners to present innovative examples of their
work, will aim to present significant developments in the use of
geophysical and other non-invasive techniques in the monitoring of
landfills and will encourage regulators, local authorities, operators
and engineers to present their experiences and put forward their
expectations and requirements for such monitoring now and in the future.
We invite expressions of interest in the form of short abstracts (half
page) for oral or poster presentation to be submitted to Dr Steve Taylor at:
School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences, University of
Birmingham, Edgbaston, Birmingham, B15 2TT.

Or send an e-mail to [log in to unmask] with "EIGG Landfill
Conference" in the subject.
Deadline for submission 19 December, 2003.
