Dear Colleagues,
We would like to draw your attention to a special session on 'Metamorphic
and geodynamic evolution of the Alps' at the 32nd International Geological
Congress in Florence (August 20-28, 2004). The details of the session are
posted below, and we hope that many of you will submit an abstract. Please
inform colleagues who might be interested as well.
Thanks very much and see you in Florence,
Roland Oberhänsli, Guido Gosso & Jean-Paul Cadet

Metamorphic and geodynamic evolution of the Alps:
A view through the new synthetic map - CGMW
A Swiss-Franco-Italian-Austrian-German team is currently compiling a new
map on the metamorphic evolution of the Alps combining petrologic
information on metamorphism, as shown on the metamorphic map of the Alps by
Frey et al, geochronology and geodynamic concepts. This version summing up
published facts to 2002/3 shall be distributed during the congress. A
symposium will be held with keynotes given by renowned colleagues on
progress in metamorphic and geodynamic work.
We welcome all to join in the effort to view the Alps as a dynamic system
combining the skills of structural geology, petrology and geochronology as
well as to report on thermo-mechanical modelling. P-T-t trajectories have
been investigated extensively in the Alps, while the contemporaneous
tectonic evolution remains less well documented. Understanding the
thermo-mechanical evolution recorded in relict metamorphic domains calls for
the combination of petrological, structural, geochronological and kinetic
investigations.
To discuss the connection of geodynamics processes of subduction, collision
and orogenic collapse scaled down to nappe structures and petrogenetic as
well as geochronologic findings¹ recording coherent thermal and structural
evolutions is the major aim of our symposium.
We would be happy to meet you in Florence and to hear about your latest
research and therefore invite you to submit abstracts to
Symposium T 12.03
