The Cultural Resource Management Program at the University of Victoria is pleased to offer the following distance education opportunity for programmers, heritage interpreters, special event coordinators, and outreach workers in museums, cultural centres, heritage sites, and galleries. 

PUBLIC PROGRAMMING
This distance education course examines the critical role of interpretation and public programming in helping museums and heritage organizations to engage their communities in meaningful and long-term ways. You will explore how organizations create memorable learning experiences for visitors, develop community outreach approaches, and plan for the delivery, staffing, management and evaluation of programs. You also explore and consider how museums and heritage organizations embrace learning as a valued outcome and develop effective, long-term community partnerships. You strengthen your ability to: 
        *       Evaluate the evolving role of education, interpretation and public programming in museums and heritage organizations 
        *       Engage your communities in meaningful and long-term ways 
        *       Identify the key components in creating memorable learning experiences for visitors 
        *       Develop a thematic interpretive framework for public programs to guide research, program content, and program planning 
        *       Compare the strengths and weaknesses of various interpretive and program approaches 
        *       Utilize a number of teaching strategies for public programs 
        *       Expand community outreach approaches to reach and serve new audiences, including web-based public programs and new community venues 
        *       Explore the benefits of embracing learning as a critical organizational outcome 

Instructor: Candace T. Matelic
Candace T. Matelic has developed her skills in interpretive master planning, interpretive training, and organizational development through 25 years of museum experience at the Henry Ford Museum and Greenfield Village, Mission Houses Museum, and Historic St. Mary's City. She has taught widely in museum studies and was the director of the Cooperstown Graduate Program. Currently, Candace works as a consultant focusing on organizational development and museum interpretation. She has also been involved in several professional organizations, served as a grants reviewer, and has presented at numerous conferences and workshops.
Dates: September 29, 2003 to January 16, 2004

Fee: $550 (Canadian funds, credit and non-credit participation options)

This course is open to all museum, heritage, cultural resource and related industry professionals and organizations. Enrolment options allow you to choose to take courses either for academic credit or to enhance professional development.
