The Information Centre about Asylum and Refugees (ICAR) is based in the
School of Social Science and Public Policy at King's College London. It was
set up in March 2001 to promote information based public debate and evidence
based policy making on all issues relating to refugees and asylum in the UK
context. ICAR is funded by charitable trusts

ICAR is looking for a full-time researcher to join its small, committed team
to work on stage 1 of its exciting new project - 'Understanding the
Stranger'. The project will investigate the experiences of local areas of
the UK that have received large numbers of asylum seekers, in order to
identify what has succeeded and what has failed. Lessons learnt and best
practice will be recorded and made available to other areas facing a similar
situation.

The researcher's job will be to:

- Carry out a literature survey of relevant research
- Design and carry out a method of investigating the experiences of selected
local areas of the UK
- Devise and implement an appropriate format for writing up findings for
dissemination and to inform the further development of the project
- Record contacts, projects, research and best practice into ICAR's
databases
- Attend meetings on behalf of ICAR and present on the project as required
- In conjunction with other ICAR staff members, keep up to date with
Government plans for accommodation centres and other initiatives for housing
large numbers of asylum seekers
- Carry out other appropriate tasks as required to complete the project
- Contribute to ICAR's wider work on public debate of UK refugee and asylum
issues

- Knowledge of UK refugee and asylum issues and of that sector
- Self starter with lots of initiative and the ability to think
strategically
- Ability to relate to a wide variety of people and organisations
- Understanding of, and commitment to, the aims and objectives of ICAR
- Excellent communication skills
- Ability to manage own workload and to work under pressure
- Fluency in written and spoken English
- IT literacy (including Internet and database research skills)
- Ability to travel around the UK and to work some evenings and weekends

Desirable
- Previous research experience involving the use of interviews and focus
groups

Salary and conditions

The position is for 6 months full-time or equivalent. The full time annual
salary rate is £21,413 p.a., inclusive of London Allowance (Research Grade1A
Point 5). It will involve periods of travel around the UK and some evening
and weekend work. The researcher will be based in ICAR's offices in central
London.

The position may be extended, funds and performance permitting.

Reporting
The researcher will report as necessary to the ICAR Project development
officer and the ICAR Director.
