ICPLA10 2004
The 10th meeting of International Clinical Phonetics & Linguistics
Association will take place in Lafayette, Louisiana in 2004, and the
Organising Committee is now issuing the formal Call for Papers.
The Conference will take place from Wednesday night 26 February 2004
until Saturday 29th. An innovation for ICPLA10 will be the introduction
of a fourth plenary lecture, on Wednesday night, just before the
welcoming buffet/reception. This plenary will be presented by Dr John W.
Oller, Jr., and the other plenary speakers will be advertised soon.
ICPLA10 has been timed to allow delegates to attend the Mardi Gras
celebrations in Louisiana just before the conference starts. Mardi Gras
parades and festivities take place, of course, in New Orleans, and Baton
Rouge. But there are also many other towns in the Acadiana region of the
state that hold celebrations. Lafayette itself hosts several parades,
and arrangements will be made with the conference hotel to provide
special rates for delegates deciding to come a day or two early. Full
details on accommodations and costs will be available in the next couple
of months, and members will be e-mailed. Details will also be made

ICPLA10. We do also welcome abstracts from non-members. Papers are
welcome all areas of our field.

The International Conference on Tone and Intonation will be held at
the Santorini Image Hotel in Massaria (Santorini, Greece), 9-11
September 2004. The conference is the closing event of a three-year
scientific exchange programme funded by the European Science
Foundation as the Network 'Tone and Intonation in Europe' (TIE). The
aim of the network has been to stimulate and coordinate research on
the prosody of European languages and language varieties, with special
emphasis on languages that feature lexical tone. The workshops have
been devoted to tonogenesis, experimental procedures, and typology,
and have attempted to embed the discussion of the European languages
in a global typological perspective.
The conference intends to close off the Network programme in the same
spirit, and will thus include contributions dealing with European as
well as non-European languages. While there will be a preference for
papers on the interaction between intonation and lexical tone,
typologically, historically and psycholinguistically oriented work,
including brain imaging research, on either tone or intonation is
welcomed.

The focus in research in prosody has recently moved from intonational
phonology to areas which interface with other domains, most notably
discourse and pragmatics. At the same time, research in pragmatics and
discourse has recognized a need to take account of prosodic
phenomena. In this way, it has become possible to identify a set of
phenomena where research in pragmatics feeds into research in prosody
and vice versa - for example, focus and information structure,
questions about processing units and the identification of an
utterance, the communication of attitudes and emotions, constraints on
implicatures.
The aim of this conference is to provide a forum in which researchers
from prosody and pragmatics can pool their research, and in this way
contribute to a fuller understanding of the role prosody plays in
pragmatic interpretation.
CALL FOR PAPERS
We invite abstracts for papers (30 mins + 10 mins
discussion). Abstracts will be chosen both for the inherent quality of
the particular prosodic/pragmatic analyses they offer and their
potential contribution to the development of the interface between
prosody and pragmatics.
A selection of papers from the conference will be published in a
Special Issue of The Journal of Pragmatics (eds. Anne Wichmann & Diane
Blakemore).

Postdoc opportunity at ENST, Paris
ENST (Paris) and LORIA/ISA and LORIA/Speech Group are involed in a
project aiming at assisting second language acquisition. The first stage
of this project is to assemble already developed components, a basic 3D
face model, 2D vocal-tract model, and an acoustic model of the vocal
tract for speech synthesis, to formulate a coherent speaking head.
We have already developed a basic 3D face model, in addition to 2D
vocal-tract model, and an acoustic model of the vocal tract for speech
synthesis. In the 3D model, 65 vertices represent the face; most of them
located on the lower half of the face where deformations are important.
Five "articulatory" parameters control the position of these vertices
during speech production. Although we obtain a rough human face like
object by connecting (or meshing) the vertices, it is not adequate for
the language acquisition purpose. We need a more realistic looking face
model. We seek therefore a specialist in the image processing who is
interested in the mapping of face deformations in the rough
representation onto a generic head model having a much finer mesh
representation and a texture, such as Poser. The obtained realistic face
will be combined with the 2D vocal-tract model and the acoustic
synthesizer to constitute a coherent speaking head. We expect a
post-doctoral researcher to work for one year in Paris.
Scientific requirement: The candidate must have a Ph.D and a strong
experience in Computer vision and/or Speech processing (articulatory
modeling). The candidate will be working in collaboration with members
of the LORIA/Speech, LORIA/ISA and ENST/TSI group. We expect a
post-doctoral researcher to work on his/her preferred topics within the
interest of the project. We would also appreciate and value his/her own
initiatives in the project.

The Department of Communicative Disorders at the University of
Louisiana at Lafayette announces a position for an Assistant/Associate
Professor in Speech and Language Pathology, tenure track position to
begin August 2003. Responsibilities include teaching doctoral,
graduate and undergraduate courses; conducting research in areas of
expertise; providing service to the department and University
including some clinical supervision.
Required qualifications include a doctoral degree in Communicative
Disorders or related area; the Certificate of Clinical Competence in
Speech-Language Pathology and eligibility for Louisiana license;
evidence of scholarly activity - multiple publications preferred;
expertise in two of the following: augmentative/alternative
communication, multiple handicapped, early intervention, traumatic
brain injury, or phonological and articulatory disorders. Salary and
rank are dependent upon qualifications and experience.

Description:
The Language and Linguistics Program at Queen's University, Kingston,
Canada, invites applications for a limited Term Adjunct appointment of
eight (8) months, commencing September 1, 2003. A completed Ph.D. is
required. The candidate will be expected to teach five (5) half
courses in the area of phonetics, morphology, syntax, semantics and
topics in morpho-syntax. The position is subject to budgetary
approval.
