Well done Phil - it needs to be done but a word of warning. Don't
mention
dust filled repositories to archivists - they'll froth at the mouth.
It's
one of those stock phrases applied to archives which archivists hate.
The
equivalent phrase applied to achaeologists is I think 'racing against
time'
- even though we've been organizing excavations well in advance of
development for decades...

Dear all
As I am not sure how well the jungle telegraph/grapevine is working
these
days, so I thought I'd let you all know that I'm leaving DSU for a while
to
go on secondment to the University of London Computer Centre to take up
the
post of Editor for a joint project between ULCC and the National
Archives(or
PRO as it used to be called).
The project known as 'The Subject in Question' will involve the
development
of a thesaurus to be used by the archive community, based on the UNESCO
thesaurus.
I will obviously be keeping in touch with m'learned colleagues and I
don't
intend to leave the FISH list but my priorities for the next 13 months
(from
June) will be archives not monuments.
I'm really looking forward to discovering what actually happens behind
the
walls of these venerable dust filled repositories and working alongside
the
archives community.
Phil
You can all stop laughing now and climb back onto your chairs
