Dear Colleague,
Apologies for the inevitable cross-postings.
Are you interested in using Census data in your teaching? The CHCC project,
funded by the Joint Information Systems Committee, has been developing
learning and teaching materials based on Census datasets (contemporary and
historical) available to the UK higher and further education community.
Many of these materials are now available and you may be interested in
looking at them with a view to incorporating them into your teaching
programmes for the next academic year.
The materials are of two types; the first are dataset specific i.e. they
are based on the SARs (Samples of Anonymised Records), the CAS (Census Area
Statistics) or the HCC (Historical Censuses Collection). These resources
have been developed by the project team and commissioned authors. They are
freely downloadable to UK HE and FE users and, importantly, can be
customized for your use. Teachers and students have piloted many of the
resources and feedback has been incorporated into the revised materials.
Please see http://www.chcc.ac.uk/ltlinks/ for links to these resources.
The second type is what the project calls ?overview units?. These are in
the form of a series of FAQs on subjects covering What is the Census; Using
the Census, and Uses of the Census. These will be available towards the end
of the summer ? but for a taster please see http://www.chcc.ac.uk/overview/
The project is also developing a Census Resource Discovery System which
will allow users to search and browse by keyword, country, census year and
type (dataset or learning and teaching resource). More information about
this system will be sent out when it becomes available.
Please do not hesitate to contact the project manager, Dr Jackie Carter,
for further details of any of the CHCC materials
