International Symposium on Information and Communication
Technologies

24-26 September 2003
Trinity College Dublin, Ireland
The objective of this workshop is to analyse the strengths and
weaknesses of available and foreseeable digital tools as a support for
specific types of human interaction.
A large number of communication devices have become available for the
support of human interaction (from the standard telephone system to the
sms service, from email to 3D chat rooms, from Web pages to virtual
community platforms, etc.). Many research studies describe these
individual systems and how they can effectively support human
interaction. Researcher in Computer Mediated Communication, whether
computer scientists, linguists, sociologists or philosophers have
analysed how certain aspects of human interaction may be supported or
changed by the use of some specific tools. We would like to promote a
vertical approach analysing how specific interaction types (task oriented,
narrative, visual, etc.) may be best supported by individual tools or by
certain features of these tools.
The new generation of communication tools focuses more and more on
communication levels other than the transmission of the message. We
are interested in innovative theories and practices centred on
methodologies which enable digital tools to support interaction at a
semantic and environmental level.
Submitted papers, reporting both theoretical and experimental work,
should address one or more of the following questions:
- Which digital tools best support different types of human interactions?
(association tool / interaction type)
- If we focus on one specific type of human interaction, what are the
consequences on the design of the supporting tool? (association
interaction type / system design)
- How do humans select the appropriate interaction tool?
- How can semantic and environmental aspects of interaction be
supported by digital tools (e.g. agent systems)
Papers accepted for workshop presentation will be included in the ISICT
