We are delighted to announce that Andrew Thoelke (Chief Technology
Architect at Symbian) will be giving the keynote talk at this MM-NET
workshop. Several of Symbian's key technical personnel will be attending
and some will be giving presentations (hopefully we will hear more about
Symbian's hard real-time kernel for mobile phones). Symbian are also
sponsoring the workshop lunch!
If you haven't registered yet, please do so at
http://www.mm-net.org.uk/ Registration is free and MM-NET can support some
travel costs (see below). If you haven't yet decided on a talk, register
anyway and send in your talk details later.

1st MM-NET Workshop on
Memory Management for Handheld Devices
University College London
2nd December 2003
Call for papers and participation
There is increasing market pressure to provide sophisticated applications
on handheld devices such as smartphones and PDAs. Typically these
applications are programmed in C++ or Java, with increasing reliance on
dynamic and automatic memory management. The constrained heaps of these
devices and requirements for (soft and hard) real-time performance, coupled
with constrained hardware and power resources, provides a challenging
environment for memory management.
The UK's MM-NET (Memory Management Network) therefore proposes to hold a
1-day workshop on Memory Management for Handheld Devices on Tuesday 2nd
December 2003 at University College London (venue, time and schedule to be
confirmed). Topics of interest include but are not limited to:
Space and time performance issues
MM algorithms
Reliability of MM systems
Novel languages and their MM performance
Hard real-time MM
Garbage collection
Static prediction and bounding of resource utilisation
Power management related to MM
Participation is welcomed from both academic and industrial sectors.
Registration is free and should be made through
http://www.mm-net.org.uk/
Coffees and lunch will be provided. Some support for travel costs for UK
personnel may be available (please contact Richard Jones
<[log in to unmask]>).
Talk slots will be allocated on a first-come first-served basis. If you
would like to give a talk, please indicate this when registering for the
workshop, and indicate whether you prefer a short (15 min) or normal (30
min) slot. Titles and abstracts should be finalised before the
workshop. We will collect presentations from the workshop online to form
an informal proceedings at the time, and may approach speakers to form an
edited formal proceedings at a later date.
