The preliminary program, registration and hotel information for the
Fifth International Conference on Ubiquitous Computing (UbiComp 2003,
Seattle, October 12-15) is now available on our web site
(www.ubicomp.org).

Among the program highlights:

  - Inspiring keynote by William J. Mitchell, author of City of Bits,
    e-topia and the forthcoming Me++

  - Provocative panel on Mobile Play: Blogging, Tagging, and Messaging

  - Largest number of demonstrations and posters ever at UbiComp, many
    of which allow attendees to "experience ubicomp" directly. (Details
    of demos and posters will be announced in a few weeks.)

  - A collection of 27 high quality research papers. Topics are
    Modeling and Inference; Location and Space; Context Awareness; New
    Devices and Technologies; Social Aspects and Privacy; Interfaces;
    Domestic Environments and Healthcare

Registration for UbiComp 2003 is now open and can be completed online:

https://www.engr.washington.edu/epp/ubicomp/registration.html

The early advance registration discount deadline is September 12;
additional discounts are available for ACM members and students.

The conference hotel is The Westin Seattle. Discounted room rates for
conference attendees are available at the Westin as well as at The
Sixth Avenue Inn, which is located across the street from the Westin.
Note that due to other conventions in Seattle at that time, rooms
should be booked as soon as possible. More information about the
hotels, reservations and travel information can be found at:

http://www.ubicomp.org/ubicomp2003/hotel.html

Other information about Seattle and its attractions is also available:

http://www.ubicomp.org/ubicomp2003/attractions.html

The UbiComp website also contains a discussion space, where community
members can post their views on various issues. Recently, a
discussion thread on privacy, criticizing the way that some previous
work in ubicomp has dealt with this issue, has been initiated by Paul
Dourish, who is co-organizing a UbiComp 2003 workshop on the topic:

http://ubicomp.org/forum/discussion/index.jsp

We encourage all members of the ubicomp community to join in this
discussion thread and/or initiate discussions on topics of interest to
them in the online discussion space. And, of course, we urge all of
you to attend UbiComp 2003, to participate in inspiring discussions
like this with your colleagues in physical discussion spaces at and
around the Westin Seattle!

Sincerely,

Mike Hazas
UbiComp 2003 Publicity Chair
