Applications are invited for a Lecturership grade A/B in Roman archaeology
to cover for staff on leave.  The ability to contribute to the teaching of
Roman history and/or classical languages would be an advantage.

The post is available as a half-time (0.5 fte) one year post from September
2003 or as a full-time post for semester 1 only (September 2003--January
2004).

The University of Manchester is advertising a 10-month full-time temporary
lectureship in Ancient History (Greek) from 1 Sept 2003 to 30 June 2004.

The vacancy is the result of the appointment of Dr Stephen Hodkinson to a
Professorship at the University of Nottingham, and it is anticipated that a
permanent replacement will be advertised during the course of the coming
academic year.

The deadline for applications is 4th August 2003, with interviews
provisionally fixed for the week beginning 18th August. Candidates may wish
to inform their referees that shortlisting will take place as soon as
possible after the application deadline.

Position: Post-Doctoral Fellow
Location: Chicago, IL

The Oriental Institute at the University of Chicago invites applications
for the Oriental Institute Post-Doctoral Fellowship program for the
2003-2004 academic year. This is a twelve month, non-renewable fellowship.
The Post-Doctoral Fellow will organize and conduct a one-to-two day
conference at the Oriental Institute on key comparatively-oriented
theoretical or methodological issues in the field of ancient studies
(archaeological, text-based, and/or art historical avenues of research). We
encourage cross disciplinary proposals that deal with the ancient Near East
(including Egypt) or that compare the Near East with other cultural areas.
The conference will take place in mid-February 2004. After the conference,
the Fellow will assemble and edit the proceedings for publication by the
Oriental Institute. The Fellow is also encouraged to pursue his or her own
research while in residence and to interact with the Oriental Institute
community. Qualifications: Ph.D. in a discipline relating to ancient
studies must be complete at the time of application. Applicants should send:
    * 5-page proposal outlining nature and structure of the conference
(including names and paper topics of key participants)
    * curriculum vitae,
    * 3 letters of reference (these may be sent under separate cover).
