Course: Introduction to Bayesian Methods and WinBUGS
Venue: Department of Social Medicine, University of Bristol
Duration: three days
Date: 14th-16th July 2004
Cost: £450
Tutors include: Nicky Welton, Tony Ades
-------------------------------------------------
The course aims to introduce the basic concepts of Bayesian statistical
methods, and to illustrate the application of these methods in the WinBUGS
software via a range of examples in epidemiology and health economics.
'Introduction to Bayesian Methods and WinBUGS' is intended for
statisticians, epidemiologists and health economists who have a reasonable
understanding of classical medical statistics to the level of the Basic
Statistics short course (specifically the concepts of logistic regression
and interaction - email [log in to unmask] for details of the Basic
Statistics course) and some experience with statistical software, such as
Stata. No prior knowledge of Bayesian inference or WinBUGS is required.
Topics to be covered in the course include: introduction to Bayesian
Inference; introduction to WinBUGS; hierarchical model for proportions;
predictive distributions; directed Acyclic Graphs; linear regression;
practical modelling: convergence, centring and priors; meta-Analysis: fixed
and random effects; cluster Randomised Factorial design trial; RCT embedded
in cost-effectiveness analysis; cost-effectiveness acceptability curves;
institutional rankings; model criticism
