>'No picture is painted for the beholder. No book is written for the reader.
No symphony is composed for
the listener.")<
Obviously. Just as no computer is made for the user, no dentures made for
the wearer, no food prepared for the eater. Haydn didn't compose for his
patrons nor did Dickens write for his readers and Shakespeare definitely had
no interest in his audience. J.K.Rowlings clearly writes for
self-gratification while conversation itself is made regardless of the
listener. No Italian painters created anything for the purposes of the
church and things like Purcell's drinking songs were composed for solitary
contemplation. I particularly like the idea of matters which require group
involvement, like orchestral work or plays, being not made for anyone. I
might suggest that the above is solipsism in overdrive, if taken out of
context, I am aware of the painful realities behind Benjamin's words.
I am not writing for anyone, I am talking to myself, please do not read my
post!
(There might be a touch of irony in this one)
