I think you've been doing a fine job of overseeing the list. The problems of
tone in e-mail groups are immense: one person's joke is another's insult. Dr
Robin Hamilton and I tried a deliberate policy of including mock insults to
each other to try to defuse the 'mood', and 'mood' is something that e-mail
seems particularly effective at conveying, but we've decided that it is a
failed policy. While I too have been guilty of addressing someone in a
jocose style because I was used to addressing them in a humorous and
easy-going manner.
Keep up the good work. When lots of people begin to talk lots of things get
said!
