If this is of any use, I was discussing with a friend the matter of the
erotic in art this afternoon, and we ended up with the conclusion that
'sensual' would be a better term. For example, if I touch a table my
apprehension of it is not erotic, well I hope not, else I really will have
problems!, but certainly a matter of physical awareness, of involvement of
the senses, touch and sight in such a case. I can see though why many women
writers would want to emphasise the erotic as traditionally in our culture,
and I am not speaking just of high culture, women are turned into objects. I
notice Marcus's recent questionings about writers identities have only been
addressed to women correspondents on this list, he has raised no doubts
about males. That seems very telling to me, and I am not taking some
simplistic feminist line here, but observations must be observed.
