Summer Institute on International Migration, Ethnic Diversity and Cities
Amsterdam, June 2004
The three-week summer programme on International Migration, Ethnic
Diversity and Cities is multidisciplinary, internationally comparative,
and seeks to explore the topical features of international migration and
the incorporation of immigrants in the cities and states of destination.
Whatever the causes of international migration or the kind of selection
at the border, old and new immigrations have obviously produced all
sorts of social, cultural, political and economic changes, and had an
impact on general trends in specific ways. Today, European cities are
characterized by diversity in terms of legal status, educational
qualification, occupational background, gender, ethno-cultural beliefs,
and practices. The incorporation of immigrants in the host society is
obviously a complex process that takes many years and usually involves
several generations. During that period, existing social, political, and
economic arrangements are put to the test, while the classic question of
social integration comes to the forefront in a fundamental way. At the
current juncture, there is a dire need for empirical knowledge and
theoretical insights in immigration and integration issues. The Summer
Institite on Migration is one way of fulfilling this need. These themes
will be approached in an international comparative way, building on
theoretical and empirical contributions of sociologists, political
scientists, anthropologist, geographers, economists, philosophers, and
historians. The Institute is open to advanced undergraduate, graduate
and post-graduate students as well as professionals working in a field
related to the topic of the Summer Institute
