Background
The Public Record Office (PRO) is the National Archive for England, Wales
and the United Kingdom. Its holdings cover over 1000 years of history -
from the Domesday Book to the latest Government papers to be released to the
public. The PRO is at the forefront of the drive to make the nation's memory
and culture available to the widest possible audience.
An opportunity has arisen for a Project Manager to work on the development
of the CASBAH (Caribbean Studies/Black and Asian History) Project and other
projects to promote social inclusion. This renowned demonstrator project was
set up to identify and map national research resources relating to Caribbean
Studies and the history of Black and Asian People in the UK, and created the
first electronic resource for such research. CASBAH was funded for 3 years
by the Research Support Libraries Programme (RSLP), and was housed at the
University of London's Institute of Commonwealth Studies (ICS).
The PRO has been asked to scope the feasibility of the development of CASBAH
into a second phase, and to undertake development of the project alongside
the PRO's other electronic projects PROCAT, A2A, PRO Online and Moving Here.
We are seeking a Project Manager who will facilitate the transfer of CASBAH
from the ICS to the PRO, investigate and manage external funding
possibilities and scope development opportunities, liaise with all relevant
stakeholders, and manage development of the project. The role holder will
also be responsible for shaping the PRO's online services to promote the
awareness of the PRO's holdings beyond our traditional audiences.

Main Duties
·Investigate external funding opportunities and liaise with external funding
bodies. Manage and implement such external funding which will fund the
required external posts
·Manage interface with online users of the CASBAH system
·Prepare a Project Initiation Document (PID) for the development of CASBAH
and other documentation required as part of PRINCE II project management
methodology
·Oversee and implement publicity for the project, liaise and coordinate with
interested parties and ensure that the overall publicity for online social
inclusion is relevant and appropriate
·Work with other PRO Departments, primarily Education and Interpretations,
which have a social inclusion remit.
·Work with the PRO's established Advisory Group to assist in the promotion
of social inclusion
·Maintain and develop content in conformity with international and national
archival standards, ISAD(G), NCA Rules and the UNESCO Thesaurus
·Work with the Moving Here project to develop a sustainability strategy
·Manage externally funded posts and manage external fund budgets
·Work with the technical teams in e Access to ensure that the implementation
plan is met
Person specification
Essential:
·Extensive experience of working with black and asian communities in
Britain and in raising awareness of black and asian history
·Excellent interpersonal and team working skills
·Excellent communication skills including tact and diplomacy
·Knowledge of black and/or asian history and sound understanding and grasp
of the implications for the project of government policies on social
inclusion
·Experience in identifying and obtaining external funding sources
·Experience of cataloguing in an automated environment
·Knowledge of standards of archival description and indexing
·Project Management skills
·Extensive knowledge and experience of outreach and publicity
Desirable:
·Experience of producing content for the World Wide Web
·Experience of using PRINCE 2 methodology in project management
Length of Contract:
Fixed Term Appointment until March 2004 with the possibility of extension or
permanency
Salary:£25,329 - 30,957 (Band 2 Low)
