Black in the British Frame is the name given to an exhibition and book
charting the major contributions made to British film and television by
people from the African Diaspora in front of and behind the camera.
Legends such as Ernest Trimmingham, who acted in silent films, to
internationally acclaimed actors such as the 1930s film star Paul
Robeson, through to current stars of television in Eastenders and the
classic Peckham based comedy Desmonds are featured in the exhibition.
This exhibition, consisting of 11 panels, also includes new trail
blazing directors such as Newton Aduaka, whose film Rage was recently
shot in Peckham. The exhibition reveals the quintessential who's who of
the last century of black actors and actresses in British cinema and
television.
Stephen Bourne curated this exhibition from his personal archive. The
exhibition came about after Stephen invited Matthew Gould from Southwark
Council's Culture, Arts, Heritage and International Services, to see his
archive. The exhibition has so far been displayed at Peckham Library, at
the inaugural Black Film Maker Awards Ceremony at Grosvenor House Hotel,
and more recently at the British Academy of Film and Television Arts.
The Archives and Museum of Black Heritage (AMBH) have now brought the
exhibition to the premises of the Black Cultural Archives (BCA). The
Black Cultural Archives collect, catalogue and conserve artefacts and
documents attesting to the presence of black people in Britain. Amongst
the collection are materials, which illustrate the success of black
performers in British cinema and television.
A day of illustrated talks, book signing and guest appearances by
prominent black actors has been scheduled for Saturday 25th January at
the BCA Gallery. Stephen Bourne will be showcasing clips from vintage
footage he has in his archive and Menelik Shabazz from the Black
Filmmakers Magazine will be facilitating a discussion workshop. Doors
will be opened from 10.30am; the event is free and open to all.
