LONDON ENCOUNTERS
Interactions with the Metropolis 1750-1837
A one-day interdisciplinary conference
Saturday 24 January 2004
The King's Manor, University of York
During the mid- to late-Georgian period, London held a central role as an
international metropolis, wielding ever-increasing political, financial and
mercantile power. Londoners, new arrivals and visitors wondered at the
capital's immense prosperity, its enormous range of consumer goods, its
large crowds, and its unprecedented variety of innovative diversions.
However, others encountered another London: a threatening place of greed,
alienation and degrading poverty. The capital was adored and detested,
imagined as a modern Athens or a latter-day Babylon.
This interdisciplinary conference seeks contributions from those working in
history, literature and the arts addressing the unique variety of
interactions that took place between London and its inhabitants, visitors
and correspondents from the mid-Georgian period until the eve of the
Victorian era. A consideration of these often unfamiliar narratives and
microcultures will provide a context for understanding the wider
intellectual, social, religious and political aspects of the metropolis
during this period.
Possible topics include, but are by no means limited to: the season and the
grand tour; religion and fashion; London directories; transport to, from
and around London; interactions between London and provincial, European,
Asian and colonial towns and cities; guidebooks and other 'tourist'
commodities; lesser known London narratives; shopping; relationships
between London and provincial collectors; urban panoramas; crime and
punishment; Ackermann's Microcosm of London; specific interactions dealing
with ideas of social and cultural differentiation during this period. Other
suggestions will be welcomed warmly.
Suggested papers should be 20-30 minutes in length.
Please send proposals, including those from postgraduates working on
related topics, comprising the name and institutional affiliation of the
presenter, and a title with abstract (300-500 words) as a Word attachment
(preferred format) or hard copy by 10 November 2003. These and any further
enquiries should be addressed to Angus Whitehead ([log in to unmask]) or
Ruth Stewart ([log in to unmask]) Centre for Eighteenth Century Studies, The
King's Manor, York, YO1 7EP.
