ANTHROPOLOGY/ETHNOBOTANY COURSE IN TANZANIA

Aang Serian, a Tanzanian registered cultural organisation, is offering a
three-week programme for international students, aimed particularly at current
and prospective undergraduates (and recent graduates) in anthropology, health
sciences, botany and environmental studies. The programme will focus on herbal
medicine and other aspects of plant use in three rural communities - the Maasai
village of Eluwai, high above the Serengeti plains; the WaRangi village of
Kelema in Dodoma region, central Tanzania; and the WaChagga village of Machame
in the foothills of Mount Kilimanjaro. It will include lectures in social,
medical, biological and environmental anthropology; classes in Kiswahili and
traditional music; discussions with local experts in herbalism, bone setting
and divination; an introduction to ethnobotanical collecting techniques and a
visit to the National Herbarium of Tanzania. Total cost per person is £750.00,
which includes accommodat ion, meals and local transport, but excludes spending
money and air travel to Arusha. At least 15% of the fee paid by each student
will be donated directly to the Aang Serian Community College in Eluwai, where
courses in research methods and indigenous knowledge are offered alongside
conventional English and Swahili programmes.
