University of Oxford
PhD opportunities in bioinformatics and genome variation analysis
Open day: Friday February 28th
The Bioinformatics and Genome Variation Group at the Department of
Statistics is now recruiting PhD students for this year. The group is a
world leader in the analysis of human genetic variation and genome data,
combining theoretical modelling, the development of analytical techniques,
and international collaborations in genome-related projects. The group is
associated with the Peter Medawar Building for Pathogen Research and the
Oxford Centre for Gene Function, both of which combine experimental and
theoretical approaches to biological problems. Specific research areas
include
Genome variation. Modelling gene ancestry, demographic inference,
haplotype analysis, tools for gene-mapping.
Evolutionary sequence analysis. Gene prediction, stochastic grammars
for structural inference, alignment algorithms.
Protein structure. Comparative modelling, protein interaction
networks, functional prediction.
Studentships for October 2003 are now being considered and an open day where
students can meet members of the group will be held from 2pm-5pm on Friday
February 28th in the Peter Medawar Building on South Parks Road. For more
information contact [log in to unmask] or visit the group web
site at www.stats.ox.ac.uk/mathgen.
The department is one of the strongest in the UK in modern statistical
methods, with a wide range of research interests outside the applications
described above in genetics. For further information about opportunities
for doctoral studies and the summer vacation scholarship programme see
