Colleagues,
At Exeter we have had a request from a student to be
provided with a degree certificate under a name other than
that registered under.
The student was adopted, and since that time has operated
under the surname of the adoptive parents. A certificate
has been issued to the student under than adoptive surname.
The student has now traced the birth/natural mother and
wishes to be awarded in that birth mother's name. The
student has supplied a copy of the birth certificate which
only states two christian names (together with the birth
mother's full name under 'maiden surname of mother').
I'm not sure whether in such circumstances the person needs
to apply formally via deed poll arrangements for a change
of surname (i.e. back to that of the birth mother) or
whether the birth certificate itself provides sufficent
authority, such that we would (subject to our receipt of
the original certificate issued and our being satisfied of
the status of the birth certificate) be able to change our
records and reissue the certificate.
Any advice from those who have dealt with a similar case
would be much appreciated.
thanks,
Patrick Kennedy
