Dear Andy
At the University of Nottingham we use UCAS/JACS codes to identify all programmes of study, but as there can be more than one route for a programme (eg full-time/part-time) our system uses underlying numerical ID numbers for each record which have no meaning in relation to the programme of study.
I would be very interested to see the summary of responses to your query, as we don't find this an ideal situation.
All the best,
Anne

Dear Colleagues
In our Student Record System we currently use the UCAS code to denote a particular
programme of study. We use a four figure internal code to denote taught postgraduate
and research postgraduate programmes of study.
We are currently investigating the possibility of changing all programme codes to a more
meaningful institution-derived code (possibly using six characters instead of four).
I would be very grateful if you could spare the time to answer the following questions.
1) If you do not use JACS/UCAS codes in your Student Record System, what internal
system do you use?
2) How many characters do you use to denote a particular programme?
3) What is the underlying logic to this internal system?
Many thanks
Andy
